Quite often, an afflicted person will engage in risky behavior. Careers are damaged, relationships fall by the way, and suicidal tendencies will often manifest. Much is still to be learned about this mental disorder. It affects both adults and teens, and is prevalent even among children as young as six years of age.

Bipolar and Teens

It is quite common for bipolar to affect young adults and teens. Young children suffer from the illness as well. Since there is still much to be learned about the disorder, many experts are of the opinion the disorder of overdiagnosed and that bipolar treatment may be excessive. Of course, there are many others in the medical community that disagree.

Women and Bipolar

It is still unknown as to why, but women experience the disorder at greater rates than men. This is backed up by solid research. Women are also at risk of “rapid cycling.” This refers to having several episodes or more in a single year. Women also experience greater episodes of depression than men. The reasons may be psychological, biological, and sociocultural. It remains a fact that women must work just as hard as men while concentrating on raising a family. This can create a great deal of stress and over the long run manifest as depression. Women also tend to live longer than men so there is an element of bereavement at certain stages of advanced life.

Men are also subject to depression, and high and low moods. Some men experience these symptoms even while it appears they have a nice job, loving family, and a great home. The world can often thinks the man has everything made. The only thing is that he comes home each day, has a drink, and drops down on the couch for the rest of the evening. These are signs that something is wrong.

Signs of Bipolar Disorder

There are a number of signs to look for when assessing bipolar disorder, and it could be for mania or depression.

Mania

Be on the lookout when a person seems high or elate for extended periods of time. These same people will also display signs of being easily agitated, even twitchy or jumpy. Racing thoughts and fast talking are also signs of bipolar disorder. Risky behavior, as in unprotected sex, excessive gambling, or even spending sprees can be a sign.

Depression

Everyone will feel sad or lonely at times. When it becomes a constant thing it may be time to seek clinical help. It is easy to spot when individuals begin to suddenly withdraw from friends and family members. Depressed people also lose interest in things they may have once enjoyed. Appetites can either increase or decrease, and a person’s memory seems to wane. There may also be thoughts of suicide, or even a preoccupation with death.

Bipolar Treatment Centers

Bipolar treatment can offer relief for those suffering with the disorder. During an assessment, a physical exam will be given along with psychological testing. The doctor will conduct thorough tests to rule out other co-occurring disorders that may include drugs or alcohol.

Bipolar disorder treatment may include administering a mood-stabilizing drug that helps to lessen the highs and lows. Psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy may also be administered to help patients understand there is a definite connection between thought and behavior. If substance abuse is an issue, bipolar treatment centers can also help patients through detox to rid their bodies of harmful toxins.

Help is available. When it is self or a loved one with a mental disorder, bipolar treatment is a viable solution.
